George III Inlaid Welsh Candle/Cutlery Box
A delightful late 18th Century Welsh candle or cutlery box of tapered form with a decoratively shaped and pierced hanging extension. This antique Welsh candlebox/cutlery is constructed from mahogany and inlaid with oak in a a naive and charming design. The decorative back splat has a rustic heart motif set between two decorative shapes, typical of Welsh country furniture of the Georgian period. This 18th hanging box has the attractive, mellow colour and patination that can only be acquired over time. The overall condition is good, there is a minor damage to one corner of the base and a historic repair to the pierced back splat. This is to be expected with a much used 18th Century household piece (please see photographs) However, these flaws do not detract from the appeal of this lovely antique box. This is a beautiful Welsh country hanging box that would add character and country charm to any interior, either hanging on the wall as originally intended or free standing as a decorative piece.
